Living in Canada

Canada has an estimated population of over 35 million and approximately 20 percent of Canadians were born outside Canada. Immigrants are a valued part of Canada’s multicultural society.

The Canadian justice system gives individuals the right to equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex and sexual orientation, age, mental or physical disability.

As a resident of Canada, you have certain responsibilities such as respecting the laws; learning English and/or French; working to take care of yourself and your family; helping others in your community; and protecting Canada’s heritage and natural environment.

Residents of Canada pay a variety of taxes to various levels of government. These taxes are used to fund government programs and services, including health care and education.
